Border Counseling Services are recognized facilitators of 3 different Love and Logic Classes.
These classes build on each other and support parents' knowledge across all age ranges.
Listed below you will find the class description for each class.

Class 1: Parenting the Love and Logic Way®

This is a six-week class that consists of 2-hour sessions which are facilitated by a class moderator with the use of video presentations by Jim Fay and Charles Fay, Ph.D., discussing, modeling, and providing examples of each skill, readings, and structured group exercises and discussions. Each class teaches a subset of skills that complement the next class.
Target Audience: Parents with children of all ages, mental health professionals, and educators working with families.
This course has been designed to help participants learn skills for:
  • Creating home environments that stimulate responsibility, resiliency, and academic achievement.
  • Preventing misbehavior.
  • Avoiding power struggles while setting limits.
  • Teaching character and responsibility through modeling and the application of logical consequences instead of punishment.
  • Teaching children healthy problem-solving skills.
  • Staying calm in stressful parenting situations.
This parenting program is designed to give participants practical skills that can be used immediately. Skills that participants will come away with are:
  • Set enforceable limits 
  • Avoid enabling and begin empowering
  • Avoid un-winnable power struggles and arguments 
  • Stay calm when your kids do incredibly upsetting things 
  • Raise kids who are family members rather than dictators 
  • Help your kids learn from mistakes so they don’t repeat them

Class 2: Love and Logic: Adults Supporting Youth with Special Needs®

This four-week class consists of 2-hour sessions which are facilitated by a class moderator with the use of video presentations by Charles Fay, Ph.D., discussing, modeling, and providing examples of each skill, readings, and structured group exercises and discussions. Each class teaches a subset of skills that complement the next class.
Target Audience: This course is a follow-up/bonus program to Parenting the Love and Logic Way®, OR Love and Logic: Adults Supporting Youth with Challenging Pasts®, and has been designed for participants who already possess a good understanding of the Love and Logic approach. Participants must have attended a previous Love and Logic class.
This course has been designed to help participants learn skills for:
  • building safe, healthy relationships
  • empowering youth with special needs to be more self-reliant
  • teaching daily living skills
  • teaching youth with special
  • needs healthy coping skills
  • helping youth attribute success to effort
Participants will learn:
  • A process for understanding the unique needs and competencies of each child.
  • How to avoid becoming overwhelmed by a child’s multiple, disabilities, and/or diagnosis
  • How to maintain healthy “can-do” expectations.
  • Tips for teaching essential life skills.
  • Skills for developing and maintaining a cooperative parent/school/counselor team.
  • Strategies for reaching discouraged and resistant learners.

Class 3: Love and Logic: Adults Supporting Youth with Challenging Pasts®

This is a six-week class that consists of 2-hour sessions which are facilitated by a class moderator with the use of video presentations by the program designer Dr. Charles Fay, Ph.D., which includes discussing, modeling, and providing examples of each skill, class readings, and structured group exercises and discussions. Each class teaches a subset of skills that complement the next class.
Target Audience: General and special education teachers, counselors, psychologists, parents, foster parents, adoptive parents, and anyone else serving youth who has experienced trauma.
Course Goals: Participants will learn the following:
  • How trauma affects the brain, including its impacts on the social, emotional, and
  • behavioral adjustment of youth
  • A practical framework for meeting the unique needs of this population of youth
  • The role played by attachment relationships, as well as skills for building them
  • Strategies for responding to defiance and other serious forms of misbehavior
  • The importance of providing sincere empathy and how to do so on a consistent basis
  • Skills for remaining emotionally healthy while meeting the needs of these youth
  • Tools for addressing the underlying emotional factors affecting behavior and
  • academic performance
